Importance of Vitamin K

Vitamin K plays an important role in helping the blood clot. It prevents from excessive bleeding. Vitamin K is actually a group of compounds, that is K1 and K2. Vitamin K1 is obtained or present in leafy greens and other vegetables while K2 is mainly in eggs, meat, cheese and synthesized by bacteria. Some research suggest K2 can help people with osteoporosis problem.
Low level of vitamin K risks the following sickness :
  • Have disease that effect the absorption in the digestive tract, such as Crohn's disease.
  • Taking drugs that interfere with vitamin K absorption. ( such as warfarin drug)
  • Drink alcohol heavily
  • Severely malnourished
Taking more green vegetables, leafy vegetables, green fruits helps to stock-up vitamin K. So, help yourself with daily enough/sufficient intake of fresh leafy vegetables. Liver would definitely love them!!

Reiki Symbols

Reiki symbols are basically Sanskrit derived Japanese forms that help improve the flow of Life Force Energy. These symbols are an art essential part of Reiki practice and they used to be secret and revealed only to Reiki students who are initiated into the advance or master level. However, with the technology available today it's hard to keep anything secret, so information about them can easily found on the internet.
Although these symbols apparently may seem not have any special power in and of themselves, using them after attunement helps a practioner focus the Reiki energies. The primary three symbols are used in traditional Reiki are Cho Ku Rei or the Reiki Power Symbol, Sei He Ki or the Emotional and Mental Healing Symbol and Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen or the Distance Healing Symbol

Varma (Acupressure) Points for Headaches, Stiff Neck and Pain Relief

Those having neck pain, head aches, migraines, stiff neck, eye strains, ringing in the ears, nervousness, hypertension, fear, irritability, judgmental issues or attitudes need to know that their water element is in imbalance condition due to several factors, such as built of wastage by improper food habits, fear, nervousness, bad postures, stress, etc

In acupressure or Thodu Varma remedy, this can be relieved with getting to know the energy channel and its meridian point that when activated would balance the vital energy by removing the built-up blocks along the channel line.  Alternatively, K1 meridian point to can be used to treat these issues.

Know Thyself

The very basic understanding of inner organs is crucial in knowing about our-self. We're so externalized, our focus are predominantly circles around our look. We forgot the inner organs do need equal attention for health maintenance as well.

Organ systems with their corresponding times

A brief explanation of the organ systems with their corresponding times, and how imbalances in these systems may arise both physically and emotionally.

Macular Edema

What is Macular Edema?
It is simply a build-up of fluid in the region of retina called Macula and to be precise, at the center of retina. Well, then what is retina? It is the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. So, the macula which is a part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. When there is fluid build-up in this region, it cause the macula to swell and thicken. thus causes vision impairment.

What causes Macular Edema?
Most common cause is diabetic retinopathy and also after eye surgery. Macular edema can also happen after eye surgery in association with age-related macular degeneration or as a result of inflammatory diseases that effects the eye. Any diseases that damage the blood vessels in the retina can cause macular edema.

Age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease characterized by deterioration or breakdown of the macula, which is responsible for sharp, central vision. In neovascular AMD, also called “wet” AMD, blood vessels begin to grow up from the choroid (the bed of blood vessels below the retina) and into the retina. These new and abnormal blood vessels leak fluid into the macula and cause macular edema.

In naturopathy, its simply cause by accumulation of waste/toxins in organs of our body. Liver/Gall Bladder as the wood element has vital energy force imbalance. Why? Environmental, improper food digestions and mood of the person who had this problem.

Macular degeneration is due to blood deficiency and Qi deficiency. The liver is the blood storing organ. Blood deficiency of the liver will lead to malnutrition of the eye.

Therefore, the therapeutic principles are to replenish the liver and kidney, to promote circulation and to resolve the presence of phlegm and dampness that can block the circulation in the eyes. The circulation in the eyes is controlled by the spleen/stomach organs.

This dis-ease can be reversed by bringing back the Shakti force (Qi) to the impacted organ(s) and with proper food digestion and behavioral modification(life-styles), one could recover enjoy better vision. Thodu Varma (Acupuncture therapy) can be administered with ease to alleviate the dis-ease.

Organs exclusive timing chart

This is the organs exclusive timing chart. The time when each inner organs does it maintenance where removal of wastes were undertaken. If we have any discomfort during this period, do not get alarmed because, this means organs are removing wastes from its system with regards to its exclusive timing.
Body do not react to waste removal activities when our organs has little wastes or toxins, but if there are large amount of wastes/toxins need to be removed, body reacts and we would feel the "heat" ,such as feeling of heatiness', elevated body temperature (fever), high blood pressure (body doing extra work to supply to the organs where it needs extra blood), nausea, low blood pressure, pains and headaches or any other discomforts.
We're usually become alarmed when these reactions are being felt. Quickly seek medical intervention, pop in some pills and remove the the discomfort by killing the viruses, germs or pathogens that are removing the wastes/toxins. these results in temporary relief to body, but in the long run, the wastes continues to be present in that organ and resurface on a later time.
If you awake in the middle of the night repeatedly - make a note of the time and check the above diagram to see if the organ-health and corresponding emotions relate to your present physical and emotional health.
Making your own correlations is what this is all about...
Perhaps there is a time of day that you find particularly odious - or a time when you feel tired and wiped out? Check the chart and see if you can shed any light on what lies at the bottom of your discomfort.
      The solutions:
      1. Rest when felt dis-ease.
      2. Watch out what you eat.
      3. Proper food digestion ( chew the food, eat only when hungry, drink only when thirsty)
      4. Keep the mind healthy and calm

Best time for dinner

Dinner - the ideal time to have dinner is before 7 pm and should keep a gap of 3 hours between dinner and bedtime. Do not delay later than 10 pm. Eating close to bedtime can interfere with quality of sleep as the organs are busy digestion the food.

Digestion & Energy Transformation

Pay attention how we eat, what we eat and when we eat!

Waste Elimination Theory

The reason for disease from modern viewpoint or medicine :

  1. Infection theory
  2. Genetic reason
  3. Organ malfunction
  4. Deficiency of vitamins and minerals
  5. Hormone deficiency
Like above there are so many other reasons cited since modern medicine are still ill equipped to explain the diseases. It has been an ongoing research interest among scientists and researchers alike.

  1. Infection theory - Contagious diseases says that germs create diseases. Germs may refers to virus, bacterium, protist, fungus, or prion, pathogens, etc. there are several hundreds of germs that create diseases. Disease spread through air, water, food and through mosquito, fly, rat, goat , cow, dogs, birds and other animals. Not forgetting we, human ourselves spread disease easily to one another.

"The infection theory of modern medicines itself is having great contradiction", says Dr Fuzlur Rahman MBBS, MD,PhD, who is medical doctor by profession.
  • The first theory says that we have bacteria existing in our body and provide immunity to the body and protect us from diseases.
  • The second theory says virus and bacteria are the reason for the diseases. so, to get relief from diseases, antibiotics should be taken.
Therefore, Dr Fuzlur says that this contradiction itself proves that infection theory of modern medicine is still very weak.

          2. Genetic diseases (DNA) -Two wrong changes in the DNA structure/molecules which pass the genetic tendencies people get genetic disease. This means modern medicine tells that grandparent's diseases can be passed on to their offspring's. Dr Fuzlur argues even if it is correct the father's disease does not  come to all his siblings, it is uncommon that the parental defect is not passed onto the next generation, therefore if defects in DNA cause genetic diseases, then how did the first generation get this defected DNA?

So, there is no answer for this in modern medicine, but acupuncture gives clear explanation for this.

Depending upon the chemical waste accumulation in the cell, DNA gets effected.
The DNA molecules of the bacteria coming through vaccines, interact with DNA molecules of the body cells, and the DNA in the body get altered!

         3. Organ malfunction - Modern medicine says that the failure of the organs is the cause of the diseases. Modern medicine does not probe into the reasons for the organ failure but starts the work of changing the organ.

No organ will stop function overnight. It will start to slowly deteriorate before sudden shutdown. This can happen silently without being noticed. Stagnation of waste is the reason for weakness. Hence, if the organ or other troubles were the pain is felt in the weakened organ, then the organ should get correct quantity of energy.

Therefore, the waste should be removed instead of suppressing the disease symptoms!
When drugs are taken continuously, at one stage organ failure shall ensue. this concludes the reason for organ failure is the continuous stagnation of waste in the organ.

          4. Deficiency of vitamins and minerals - Modern medicine prescribes supplements and minerals to correct the deficiency of vitamins and minerals. Dr Fuzlur says this is done because of lack of understanding of natural body mechanism.

He explains that boy is using its vital force which is capable of supplying vitamins and minerals s per the body needs.

So, the requirements of vitamins and minerals depend upon the body type and will differ from person to person each time. This means presenting common quantity of vitamins and minerals for each person and every person is wrong.

When the body is digested properly, the required quantity of vitamins and minerals for the body are available at the end of digestion. Therefore, body itself gets them or develop from the nutrients.

At the end of the digestion, the body get itself creates its nutrients.

         5. Hormone imbalance - A we know the hormones are secreted by our body from respective glands according to our requirement. When our glands are not working healthy, deficiency occur, which in turn affects our body.

Rather than finding out the reason for the non-functioning of the glads and correct it, but modern medicine brings or introduces unnatural hormones (chemical) compounds from outside which were tested on animals. Body actually knows its hormone requirement at each and every time. Modern method is said to be against nature.

Hormone deficiency is caused by setback in the functioning of the glands. The stagnation in the glands is the reason for dis-functioning of glands.

==================================================================
Causes of disease as per Acupuncture - the body is the function media of the five element energies. Disease is the imbalance in the functioning of the five element energies.

THE STAGNATION OF WASTE IS THE REASON FOR THE IMBALANCE IN THE FIVE ELEMENT ENERGIES.

Therefore, stagnation of waste is disease!! WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF STAGNATION OF WASTES? It is due to our unnatural habits.
In short, not adopting the rules of nature in our regular routine is disease.

What does disobeying nature means?
  1. Eating when your are not hungry.
  2. Not eating when you are hungry.
  3. Eating too fast, without feeling the taste.
  4. Not drinking water when you are thirsty.
  5. Drinking water when you are not thirsty.
  6. Not sleeping when you feel sleepy.
  7. Working when your body need rest.
  8. Drug addiction.
  9. Consuming chemical compounds foreign to the body.
  10. Eating foods contaminated with chemicals.
  11. Acting against the natural emotions.
Along with the above, whatever is against nature's understanding, whichever differing from nature will all create stagnation of wastes in the body.

The factors that we should understand are:
  1. When the process of waste accumulation, there is no discomfort.
  2. Only in the elimination, there is a discomfort and we are terming the same as disease.
  3. Modern medicine consider these problem as disease.
  4. Only when body gets enough energy, stagnated wastes will be set out.
  5. Acupuncture treatments helps body to absorb more energy so that the disease get cured.
  6. Modern medicine prevents the body function of elimination because of the use of chemical mixtures. So, the disease is suppressed in the body.
  7. When the defect in the energy distribution is corrected through acupuncture, the wastes are sent out. The disease vanishes and health is regained.

Should fruits and vegetables be mixed together?

Question: Should fruits and vegetables be mixed together?

There is no evidence to support this food-combining rule, however digestion of fruits and vegetables begins in the mouth, where the enzymes in your saliva begin to break down the carbohydrates.

The chewed food moves on to the stomach, where everything is mixed together and the acid and protein enzymes begin to break down the protein in the vegetables.

Once in the small intestines, other enzymes break down the carbohydrates from your fruits and vegetables into glucose and vegetable protein into peptides and amino acids.

It is then absorbed, along with the vitamins and minerals, into the bloodstream.

Your body can handle the digestion of a variety of nutrients from all different types of foods at the same time.

It does not digest the carbs from fruit any differently than the carbs from vegetables.

Prescription for good health

IBD ( Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

Crohn's' disease is the inflammatory  disease of the intestines, in particular the colon and ileum. This disease is usually associated with ulcers and fistulae. Otherwise commonly called as IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). The inflammations tends to occur in the digestive system or gastrointestinal tract(GI). It can run from the mouth to the anus. Effected areas included eyes, skins and joins. Whereas, ulcerative colitis is limited to large intestine (colon and rectum). Both are categorised under IBD

In naturopathy and waste management system of the east (Thodu Varma or Touch Acupressure ) they are simply due to imbalance of energy flow. Waste has stagnated over a period of time due to human, environmental and mental factors. This disease can be cured by following few simple natural steps. They're :

  • Eating only when hungry
  • Drink only when thirsty
  • Sleep early
  • Positive mental thought when eating.
  • Chew food till watery before gulping into stomach
  • Eat more fruits & vegetables.
  • Regular simple exercise like yoga, breathing etc

Body as an Eco system

Foods that our inner organs crave for :-) Lungs - Spicy/pungent; Kidney - Salty; Liver - sour; Heart - Bittersweet; Stomach - Sweet; Liver - Sour

Body as an ecosystem, with internal organs forming the core. Each organ is a complex energetic system encompassing not only its anatomical entity, but correlated to an emotion, tissue, sense organ, mental faculty, color, climate, taste, smell and more. These are called 'internal organ correspondences".

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) theory and Thodu Varma (the Indian system equivalent of acupressure), according to the five elements (5 Element theory) which consist of fire, earth/metal, air, water and wood, the natural flavor's (bittersweet, sweet, spicy, sour, salty), five colors of food (yellow, white, black, green and red) linked with many properties of things and this shows the relationship between human and nature.

We live in between sky and earth, therefore we are part of the natural environment that we lived in that makes up the material world. The body's vital organs are closely linked with natural colorful plants in nature and each color works at different organs where they provide specific nutrients to those particular organs that it corresponds with.

Interestingly, the face parts will show if any of those inner organs are in nutrients deficiency or stagnation of wastes. Liver problem will be shown by our eyes. Jaundice is liver related disease, eyes will turn into yellow. If the ear is in pain, then kidney or urinary bladder's vital force is in imbalance or waste accumulation on that particular organ. Why this happened is another reason that needs to be explained further later.

Sirih Cina (Ketumpang Air )

This is Chinese betel leave or in Malay it is known as Sirih Cina (Ketumpang Air). Scientific name is peperomia pellucida, commonly found in damp places that contains water. I frequently remove this weed plant when cleaning the house during childhood days. They grow like bushes around the house.

Not many knew that it contains beneficial nutrients. Less common to be found now, except near paddy fields or water soaked soils near secondary jungles. The Chinese sinsei (TCM) shops sells the dried and powered leaves in grams.

Chemical composition the leaves contain large quantities of essential amino acids, lysine, leucine and isoleucine, valine a modest amount, phenylalanine and threonine and also many other essential amino acids,  Apiol, 2, 4,5-trimethoxy styrene and 3 phytosterols campesterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol also have been found from this plant (Ghani, 2003).

Other nourishment as below:

1.Treating Gout joint pain
2.Controls acid juice of the stomach
3.Able to avoid infection of the eye
4.Cure and relieve diarrhea
5. Easing cough and fever
6.Treat hemorrhoids
7.Flu Relief
8.Treat bladder infections
9.Treat Shingles
10.Alternative medicine for high blood pressure
11.Treating diabetes

Turns out it's a tree which we deem to be no use apparently has high nutrition and medicinal values.

Diabetic Nephropathy – Using Herbals in Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention and Treatment – The Role of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and Onion (Allium cepa) in Diabetics’ Nephropathy

Nava fruit ( Blackberry plum)

The seeds of the fruit is used in various alternative healing systems. The Indian and Chinese and the people in South Asia, Southeast Asia are familiar with this fruit. I used to climb and pluck the fruits near father's workshop in Segamat, Johor (my hometown) It's sour, mildly sweet and astringent in taste. Grandparents loved naava palam (tamil word).

It tend to color the tongue purple when we eat it. The usual way to eat is to wash it clean and add few pinches of salt, to neutralize the sour taste. Whenever granddad took a walk along the road that leads to JKR workshop ( Public Works Department), he would ask me to climb and pluck the ripe fruits and being an expert tree climber back then, I would oblige with great sense of satisfaction. The fruit could not be thrown on the land because the soils would stick on the external soft skin, making it difficult to eat.

So, the best way are to put them into a plastic bag or throw them to granddad to catch. The whole family do like to eat this fruit. Granddad mentioned that it is good for diabetic patients, stomach cleanser, relief asthma attacks, effective against heart diseases, high in vitamins and minerals.

It's rare to find this tree nowadays. There is one tree near Kampung Chitti in Melaka (behind Mariaman temple).  I am not sure if it is still there as construction has been going on near the location of the tree.

I chanced to buy a few fruits in Little India last week and to my astonishment, it cost S$0.50 for just one fruit!! or S$5.00 for 250 mg. Most likely they're imported from India. After a few years of missing this fruit, finally I had the chance to savor the taste of Naava palam. Simply good!!

How to Eat Fresh Amla Fruit and What Does It Taste Like?

Amla fruit, also known as Indian gooseberry or amalaki, is a powerful and rejuvenating superfood for better health and more energy. This page will look at how to take amla, how much to have and the best times and dosage.

Fresh amla fruit has an interesting flavor. I’d already been using the powdered version for a while when I found some in an Indian grocery store and bought a bag.

Cutting open the first amla the taste is quite sour and tart and my initial thought was that I might struggle to eat them all. I’d read though about a couple of tricks to try when eating amla.

The first was to taste a little salt before you bite into them. I tried this with a little Himalayan pink salt and it definitely improves the flavor. There was much more depth, less sourness and more of a combination of flavors, but hard to describe.

The next was to have a sip of water with it. Even stranger. The taste of the amla was suddenly sharply sweet.

I had a few more of these of these Indian gooseberries for the novelty value, but ended up using the rest of them, one a day, in both freshly made juice with amla and a delicious smoothie recipe I’ll share ahead.

If you do live near an Indian grocer who can get amla fresh and want to try some unique and unusual flavors then this would be the best way to have them. Just a single fruit a day can have some amazing health benefits.

If not, powdered amla is inexpensive, easy to use and full to bursting with antioxidants. It’s a mainstay of my daily health regime.

Amla Uses – 6 Different Ways to Take Amalaki

1. Fresh Amla Fruit
Fresh is great if you can get it, even occasionally. Some Indian specialty grocers online have weekly deliveries from India and will send out orders the same day. If you live near an Indian market they may also sell them. Look for firm fruit as apparently the older ones can shrivel a little.
Not all of us have access to fresh amalaki fruit though, so let’s look at some other options to get the benefits of amla into your diet.

2. Amla Juice
Amla juice is popular in India, but unfortunately most of the commercial products have added sugar or, even worse, glucose syrup.
It’s fairly pointless to pay for a health food that is full of sugar in my opinion. The preservative sodium benzoate is also often used, which is best avoided where possible.
Local Indian grocers may stock a good version of amla juice, but based on what I’ve found online, I wouldn’t currently recommend it. If anyone does know of a high quality, reasonably priced source of amla juice please share it in the comments below.

3. Amla Candy
Obviously if supermarket amla juice is full of sugar then amla candy will be even worse. In fact, it’s even more likely to be made with glucose syrup, an ingredient strongly linked to diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
It’s a common trick of food manufacturers to use a small amount of something healthy, while simultaneously adding lots of very unhealthy ingredients like sugar syrup. Amla candy looks to me to be a classic case of this kind of deceptive marketing.
If you can’t get the fresh fruit, I’d strongly suggest using the powdered fruit or these high potency capsules available for $4 international delivery. Amla candy is unlikely to do anything positive for your health.
If you really do want to have it then try something like this homemade amla candy recipe which looks healthier than anything you’d find in a packet.

4. Amla Chutney
Amla chutney is an interesting way to get the health benefits of amla into your diet. The chutney can add a spicy kick to steamed vegetables and rice and should be available from specialist Indian stores. Once again though, if your health is more important than the taste, try to avoid brands with excessive sugar, salt, preservatives or flavor enhancers.

If you do have access to fresh Indian gooseberries, here’s a simple recipe for amla chutney:
Take 300 grams of amla fruit, 200 grams of cilantro, 50 grams of green chilies, a small piece of ginger and sea salt to taste. Blend them all up well in a good food processor. Store in a jar and cover with olive oil or avocado oil to prevent oxidization. It should keep for at least a month in the fridge.

5. Powdered Amla
Whole fruit amla powder like this organic version is, in my opinion, the best and most inexpensive option for adding Indian gooseberries to your daily diet.

Due to amla’s positive effects on your digestion, some practitioners recommend taking a small amount of it before each meal. Personally, I find I really feel it first thing in the morning and mostly use it then, often in the afternoon before gym as well.
Suggested dosage for amla powder is 1 teaspoon, or around 4 grams. While there are no commonly reported side effects of amla, as with any new health supplement it’s best to begin slowly and see how your body tolerates it.

You could start with just a quarter of a teaspoon, approximately 1 gram, building up to half a teaspoon or 2 grams over the course of week. If this is well tolerated, the following week you could increase your amla dosage to a maintenance dose of 4 grams.
I’ve read of some Ayurvedic practitioners recommending taking a teaspoon of powdered amla after each meal to help treat digestive problems and acidity in the body. This would likely be a temporary dosage though and it would be advisable to seek the advice of someone knowledgeable in Ayurveda if you intend to use it in these larger amounts.

Some sites recommend taking amla powder with a teaspoon of sugar or honey. Once again, that seems like unneeded sugars when so many of us are already overloaded with stuff (antibacterial manuka honey with all of its beneficial properties could be a good exception).
While the powder isn’t sweet, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be mixed up in a small glass of water, perhaps with some fresh lemon juice for cleansing the digestive system first thing.

In the past, I’ve sprinkled it on soft fruit like bananas and papaya, mash it up with a fork and barely tasted it. It can also be mixed in with a small amount of good quality fruit juice (but be aware that large glasses of commercial juice can really spike your blood sugar, often leading to a tiring crash after that brief sugar high). Generally it’s much better to make your own.

These days, the best way to have amla that I’ve found is to mix it into a superfood smoothie like this. Amla powder is also a key ingredient of one of the most famous Ayurvedic preparations – Triphala. I’ll be covering this amazing superfood in detail ahead.

6. Amla C Capsules
The simplest way of all to use Indian gooseberries is in the very popular amla capsules. While I personally prefer the powder as I use it so often, these amla capsules are good value and easy to take to work or with you when travelling for extra antioxidant protection.

Amla capsule suggested dosage is usually to have them both morning and evening at the recommended amount on the bottle. They are generally best taken just before a meal to help improve digestion and are a convenient way to get the extensive nutritional properties of amla wherever you are.

I’d be interested to hear of any other ways you know of to use amla. While it is still relatively unknown outside of the Indian community in the United States, I don’t think a superfood this good will stay that way for much longer.
